Three tours, and an honest way to choose between them
One multi-day trip from Hanoi and two day tours that run from Sa Pa itself. This page puts them in a single table, then explains which questions actually decide the choice and how the day tours fold into a longer programme.

Three tours, one table
| Tour | Days | Starts in | From, per person | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sa Pa in two or three days from Hanoi | 3 days, 2 nights | Hanoi | USD 235 | A first visit with Hanoi as the base city, wanting the mountain and the valley in one trip |
| Fansipan by cable car | 1 day | Sa Pa | USD 95 | Travellers already in Sa Pa with one clear day and an interest in altitude |
| Cat Cat and Ta Van on foot | 1 day | Sa Pa | USD 58 | Travellers who came for villages, terraces and twelve kilometres of walking |
Starting figures are per person at the largest group size and sit inside the ranges on the pricing page. There is no fourth product hiding behind a contact form: what is listed here is what we run.
Two questions decide which one
The first question is where you are sleeping. If your base is Hanoi and you have three days, you want the multi-day trip, because the whole design of it is the night transfer and what it does to your first morning. If you are already in a Sa Pa hotel, the two day tours are what is left to buy.
The second question is altitude or ground level. The mountain day is a ride, a staircase and a view that cloud can erase; the valley day is twelve kilometres on foot with almost nothing that can be cancelled. Travellers who can only do one, and who ask us which, are usually happier with the valley.
Three days from Hanoi
Both elements included on separate days, two nights in a Sa Pa hotel, night transfer in each direction. This is the only one of the three that involves the 315 kilometre journey.
One day, upward
The cable car covers 6,292.5 metres and 1,410 metres of vertical rise in about fifteen minutes. Then roughly 600 stone steps, or the summit funicular instead of them.
One day, outward
Cat Cat at two kilometres, Lao Chai at seven, Ta Van at twelve. Around five hours of moving time, more descent than climb, and one sustained thirty-minute ascent.
Folding a day tour into a longer programme
The two day tours are not add-ons invented for the multi-day trip. They are the same product sold separately, which means the arithmetic of combining them is straightforward rather than a discount negotiation.
- A three-day trip already contains both of them, on day two and day three. Buying either again is buying the same day twice.
- A two-day version of the trip from Hanoi contains the valley walk and drops Fansipan. Adding the mountain back means a third day, not a longer second one.
- If you are arranging your own hotel and transport and want only a guided day, book the day tour directly. Nothing is priced higher because you did not buy the package.
- Two day tours back to back work, but not in the order most people propose. Take the mountain first, when legs are fresh and morning cloud is thinnest, and walk the valley the next day.
- A single day that contains both the summit and the twelve-kilometre walk does not work. The cable car runs to its own clock and the walk finishes in the dark.
We will not sell a day that combines Fansipan and the full valley route, because it can only be delivered by rushing both. If a quote elsewhere offers it, ask which one gets cut on the day.
What is standard on all three
What the price includes
- An English-speaking guide who lives in Sa Pa, for the whole tour
- Group departures capped at twelve travellers, with a minimum of two
- All entrance and ticket costs named in the itinerary before you pay
- Lunch on every full walking or mountain day
- Drinking water, and trekking poles on the valley routes
- Transfers described by distance and duration, not as 'transfer to hotel'
- A written itinerary with the hotel named, not the star rating alone
What it does not include
- International and domestic flights
- Travel insurance, which we ask every traveller to hold
- Dinners, so the evening is yours
- Visa and entry formalities, which are yours to arrange
- Tips for guides and drivers
- Anything personal: drinks, laundry, purchases in the villages
Months, by what you came for
The two lines below are not the same shape, because the valley and the mountain fail in different months. Rice terraces repay a visit when the weather is settled and the crop is standing; the summit view depends mostly on whether cloud sits on it, and cloud sits on it a great deal of the year.
September to November is the harvest, when the fields turn gold and the summit sees its longest run of clear mornings. April and May flood the terraces for planting. June to August is the wet stretch: 2,779 mm falls across an average year and most of it lands then.
Winter is the underrated window. December to February averages about 9.5 degrees in Sa Pa, occasionally with frost or snow on the high ground, and the paths are firm rather than slick. It is also the only time of year you can stand at the summit marker without queueing for it.
When a tour does not run as written
Two things interrupt these tours and neither is within anybody's control. The cable car is suspended in high wind or bad weather, with no published threshold, so it is checked on the morning rather than forecast. And in the June to August rain season the night trains run 15 to 30 minutes late often enough to plan around.
- Cable car closed, multi-day trip: the mountain moves to the other free day. If there is no other day, the unused ticket is refunded and the day is rebuilt around Ta Phin or a longer valley route.
- Cable car closed, day tour: you choose between moving to the next day you are in Sa Pa, switching to the valley walk at the difference in price, or cancelling the day with the ticket cost returned.
- Train running late: the transfer waits at Lao Cai station; it is timed to your service, not to a fixed clock.
- Path conditions after heavy rain: the vehicle meets the group at Lao Chai at seven kilometres instead of Ta Van at twelve, which removes the section that holds water.

Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Can the three-day trip run as a private departure?
Yes, and for two or three travellers the difference is smaller than people expect, because the guide and the vehicle are the same cost whether the group is three or eight. The pricing page shows both columns.
A private departure also lets you move the mountain day if the forecast turns, which a shared departure cannot do without affecting other travellers.
Do the day tours include hotel pick-up?
Yes, anywhere in Sa Pa ward. Outside it, at a homestay in Ta Van for example, we agree a meeting point instead and say so in the itinerary.
Pick-up times differ by season and by which day you are doing; the mountain day starts earliest because the operating window opens at 07:30 on weekends and 08:00 on weekdays.
What is the minimum group size?
Two. A single traveller can join an existing departure when one is running, and we will say honestly whether one is.
Solo travellers on a private basis pay the full vehicle and guide cost, which makes the day tours a much better fit than the multi-day trip.
Can children join these tours?
On the mountain day, yes. The cable car and both funiculars carry children at reduced fares, and the summit funicular leaves about fifty steps rather than six hundred.
The twelve-kilometre valley walk is a different matter. Shortening it to Lao Chai at seven kilometres makes it workable for most children who walk regularly; the full route in wet months does not.
