Fansipan cable car cabin climbing towards the 3,143 metre summit above cloud

Tour · Fansipan, Lao Cai province

Fansipan in a day, measured in minutes rather than adjectives

The summit marker sits at 3,143 metres and the cable car gets you most of the way there in fifteen minutes. What decides whether the day works is the order you ride the four stages in, the hour you start, and whether the wind lets the line run at all.

The mountain in timings, stage by stage

Four separate pieces of machinery stand between the centre of Sa Pa and the summit marker, and each one has a published running time. Adding them up is the only honest way to plan the day, because the walking bits are short and the queueing bits are not.

The cable car was built by Doppelmayr-Garaventa, broke ground in November 2013 and opened on 2 February 2016. It holds two Guinness world records, one of them for the largest difference in elevation between departure and arrival stations on a three-rope system, at 1,410 metres. The Muong Hoa mountain train opened on 31 March 2018, was designed by Garaventa of Switzerland, and runs two cars of 20 by 3 metres carrying 200 passengers a trip.

The staircase number is not settled

The operator's own pages give about 500 steps in one place and about 600 in another. Anyone selling you an exact number is copying one of those two pages. Plan for the larger figure, or take the Do Quyen funicular and leave yourself about 50 steps.

Opening hours and what a ticket costs

The schedule in force since 21 September 2025 splits the week. Monday to Friday the cable car takes passengers up from 08:00 to 14:30, the last descent is at 16:00, and the ticket window works 07:30 to 14:00. Saturday, Sunday and public holidays the uphill window opens earlier and runs 07:30 to 15:30, the last descent is between 16:00 and 17:00, and the window works 07:00 to 15:00. The Muong Hoa mountain train starts before the cable car, with a first departure at 07:45 on weekdays and 07:15 at weekends; the summit buffet serves 11:00 to 15:00.

Which hours are clearest

Cloud on Fansipan behaves like cloud on any 3,000-metre ridge: it builds as the valley warms. The practical consequence is that the first cabins of the day give the highest chance of a view from the summit, and the middle of the afternoon gives the lowest.

  • 07:30 to 10:00. The window we build the day around. At weekends the uphill service opens at 07:30, which is the strongest reason to schedule this tour on a Saturday or Sunday rather than a Tuesday.
  • 10:00 to 13:00. Still workable, and the queue at the base station is at its longest. Groups arriving now spend more time standing than riding.
  • 13:00 to the last uphill cabin. Weekday uphill service stops at 14:30, weekend at 15:30. The light is warmer and the cloud is usually thicker.
  • Season. The operator names September to November as the cloud-hunting stretch, when an inversion below the summit is common. Spring brings rhododendron and plum blossom on the upper slopes; winter can bring frost or snow, and the steps get genuinely slippery.

If you want the mountain inside a longer trip rather than as a single day, it is day two of the three-day tour from Hanoi, and the mountain itself is described without the tour on the Fansipan destination page.

Hour by hour

Day 1

Sa Pa to the summit marker and back

The first ten minutes at the marker, before the group behind you arrives

Pick-up from your hotel in Sa Pa between 06:45 and 07:15, depending on the day of the week and which window is open. Tickets are bought before the group reaches the turnstile, which is the part of the morning that most often costs independent travellers forty minutes. The Muong Hoa mountain train covers the 2,000 metres out to the cable car station in about six minutes.

The cable car takes about fifteen minutes to climb 1,410 vertical metres over a 6,292.5 metre line. From the upper station you have two ways up: the staircase past the temple complex and the Amitabha statue, roughly 500 to 600 steps and thirty to fifty minutes at an unhurried pace, or the Do Quyen funicular, two to three minutes through the tunnel, which leaves about fifty steps to the marker at 3,143 metres.

Time at the top is 60 to 90 minutes, which is enough to reach the marker, walk the temple terraces and wait out one pass of cloud. Descent is on the same line. Back in Sa Pa by early afternoon, with lunch either at the summit buffet or in Sa Pa, depending on which option you booked.

When the wind stops the line

The operator states that the schedule can change with weather conditions at any time and that the cable car may be suspended in high wind or bad weather. No numerical wind threshold is published, so nobody can tell you in advance at what speed the line stops. Confirm on the morning; that is what the operator asks travellers to do and it is what we do on your behalf.

  1. The guide checks the operating status before pick-up, not after. If the line is already down, you are told before you leave your hotel.
  2. If the tour is part of a multi-day trip with another free day, the mountain moves to that day and the rest of the plan is reordered.
  3. If there is no other day, the unused cable car ticket is refunded to you in full and the day is rebuilt: the Ta Phin valley, the Silver Waterfall and the O Quy Ho pass, or the Muong Hoa valley walk.
  4. If the line closes while you are at the top, the descent is held until it is safe to run. That wait can be long, and it is the reason we start early rather than late.
What we cannot control

Weather closures are the operator's call and are not compensated beyond the ticket. Travel insurance that covers a missed activity is worth holding for this day in particular.

Price for a guided day

These are indicative ranges for a guided day with hotel pick-up, tickets bought in advance and a guide who stays with the group from the base station to the marker. They are per person, and the difference between columns is entirely which tickets are inside the package.

Indicative range only, per person, based on the ticket prices published for 2026. The formal quotation is issued per group once the date is fixed, because weekend and weekday operating windows differ and holiday dates carry uplifts. Children are quoted separately against the operator's child fares.

Who this tour is not for

  • Travellers who want to walk up Fansipan. This is a cable car day; the mountain path is a different product on a different kind of website, and we do not sell it.
  • Anyone unable to manage 500 to 600 uneven stone steps and unwilling to pay for the Do Quyen funicular, which is the only way around them.
  • Travellers with a single fixed day and no tolerance for a weather closure. High wind stops the line with no published threshold and no warning.
  • People who dislike crowds at close quarters. Cabins carry 35 passengers and the system moves up to 2,000 people an hour at peak.
  • Anyone expecting a view guaranteed. Cloud sits on this summit a great deal of the year; an early start improves the odds and does not fix them.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

How many steps are there from the cable car station to the summit?

The operator's own material gives two different figures, about 500 in the general guide and about 600 in the funicular article. Plan for the larger number and confirm before travel.

The Do Quyen funicular removes almost all of them: it runs from Do Quyen station to Truc May station in two to three minutes and leaves roughly fifty steps to the marker.

Is the combined ticket worth it over the cable car alone?

The combined ticket at VND 1,370,000 for an adult covers the cable car, the Muong Hoa mountain train and the summit funicular. Bought separately those three come to more, so the combination is cheaper if you were going to use all of them.

If you intend to walk the steps and reach the base station by road, the plain cable car ticket at VND 850,000 is the one to buy.

What time should we start?

As early as the operating window allows. Weekday service takes passengers up from 08:00 and weekend service from 07:30, and cloud generally builds through the morning.

A start after midday still gets you to the summit but shortens the buffer if anything is delayed, since the last uphill cabin is 14:30 on weekdays.

Can children do this day?

Yes. The cable car and both funiculars carry children at a reduced fare, and a child who cannot manage the staircase can take the summit funicular to within about fifty steps of the marker.

Temperatures at 3,143 metres run well below Sa Pa ward, so a warm layer and a windproof outer are needed even in summer.
