Tour · Sa Pa, Lao Cai province
Two ways up from Hanoi, and what each one costs you in daylight
On the ground this is one tour. The decision that changes it is how you cross the 315 kilometres from Hanoi: a sleeper train of roughly eight hours into Lao Cai, or a road transfer along the Noi Bai - Lao Cai expressway. One of them hands you a usable first morning. The other hands you a shorter night and a later start.

Night train or limousine: the choice in numbers
Three scheduled night trains run Hanoi to Lao Cai. SP1 leaves at 21:35 and arrives around 05:25, SP3 leaves at 22:00 and arrives around 05:55, SP7 leaves at 22:30 or 22:40 and arrives between 06:25 and 06:40. Running time is seven hours forty-five to eight hours, and the station asks passengers to be there thirty minutes before departure.
Road transfer is the other route. The Noi Bai - Lao Cai expressway runs 245 kilometres and opened along its full length on 21 September 2014; the Hanoi to Sa Pa drive is about 315 kilometres and takes five to seven hours depending on the vehicle and how many stops the operator makes. More than nineteen companies work the route with over two hundred departures a day, and the heaviest concentration is the overnight window between 20:00 and 02:00.

|---|---|---|
| Departure window | 21:35, 22:00, 22:30 or 22:40 from Hanoi | Departures all day; night window 20:00 to 02:00 |
| Time in transit | 7 h 45 to 8 h on rails, then 35 km by road | 5 to 7 h door to door |
| Arrival in Sa Pa | Between about 06:30 and 07:40 | Between about 03:30 and 06:00 on night services |
| Lying flat | Yes, in a berth in a closed cabin | Sleeper berth or reclining seat, depending on class |
| Published ticket range, one way | VND 340,000 to 430,000 in a 6-berth cabin; 490,000 to 650,000 in a 4-berth; 800,000 to 1,250,000 in a two-berth deluxe | VND 250,000 to 320,000 standard sleeper; 310,000 to 750,000 sleeper cabin; 300,000 to 750,000 limousine seat |
| What can go wrong | Rain season delays of 15 to 30 minutes in June to August | Traffic out of Hanoi; arrival before your room is ready |
Private carriages are a real thing on this line, not a marketing label. Operators such as Chapa Express, Victoria Express, King Express and Hara Express attach their own carriages to the state railway's SP services. Chapa Express runs seven cabins with wood panelling, wifi, towels and water, publishes VND 850,000 to 950,000 per berth in a four-berth cabin and VND 1,500,000 to 1,800,000 per berth in a two-berth VIP cabin, and attaches to SP3 out of Hanoi and SP4 on the way back. Holiday and peak-summer dates carry a 10 to 30 percent uplift.
Every train fare above comes from ticket agents, not from the railway's own booking system, which only quotes once you pick a date. Treat the figures as a working range and confirm before travel; we quote the exact fare for your date when we hold your berths.

What each option does to your first morning
The transfer from Lao Cai station to Sa Pa is 35 kilometres and takes about an hour, sometimes fifty minutes. That single leg is what makes the two options diverge, because it lands you in Sa Pa at different points of the morning with different amounts of sleep behind you.
Arrive rested, start at nine
Off the train between 05:25 and 06:40, in Sa Pa between 06:30 and 07:40. Breakfast at the hotel, bags stored, and the first walk begins by 09:00. Rooms are usually not ready before noon, so the morning is planned around that rather than against it.
Arrive early, start late
Many night services reach Sa Pa between 03:30 and 06:00. That is too early for a hotel to take you in, and the hours before breakfast are the least useful of the whole trip. It buys the cheapest ticket and costs the freshest morning.
Lose a day, gain a night
Leaving Hanoi in the morning puts you in Sa Pa mid-afternoon with the room ready and nothing lost to a bad night. It is the honest choice for travellers who do not sleep on moving vehicles, and it turns the trip into four days rather than three.
Our default for a three-day trip is the train out and the train back, in a four-berth cabin. It is not the cheapest combination. It is the one that puts the most usable daylight inside the two days that matter, and it is the only option that reliably gives everyone in the group a flat berth in a door-closed cabin.
Day by day
Day 1
Overnight from Hanoi, then Cat Cat and the first look at the valley
The first hour after the cloud burns off, usually between 09:00 and 11:00
Meet at Hanoi railway station or at the limousine office, thirty minutes before departure. Berths are allocated in advance, so the cabin is yours and nobody is shuffled at midnight. Arrival into Lao Cai is between 05:25 and 06:40 depending on the service; the transfer up to Sa Pa is 35 kilometres of switchbacks and takes about an hour.
Breakfast at the hotel, bags into storage, then the short walk down into Cat Cat, the H'Mong village two kilometres from the centre of Sa Pa. The afternoon runs along the eastern rim of the Muong Hoa valley, with the terraces below and the Fansipan ridge behind you when the cloud lifts. Check-in from noon, dinner in Sa Pa.
Day 2
Fansipan by cable car, afternoon free in Sa Pa
Standing above the cloud layer rather than inside it
An early start for the cable car, because the queue and the cloud both build through the morning. The cable car station is reached either by road or on the Muong Hoa mountain train from the centre of Sa Pa, which is a separate ticket; the cable car itself covers 6,292.5 metres with a vertical rise of 1,410 metres in about fifteen minutes. From the upper station the summit marker at 3,143 metres is roughly 600 stone steps away, or a two to three minute ride on the Do Quyen funicular.
Back in Sa Pa by early afternoon. The rest of the day is deliberately unbooked: the market, the old church square, a bowl of grilled food on Ham Rong street, or simply sleep, which after a night on the train is what a good share of travellers choose.
Day 3
Lao Chai and Ta Van on foot, night departure for Hanoi
The stretch below Lao Chai where the path runs level with the top of the terraces
The full valley walk: out of Sa Pa on the high road, down through Lao Chai at seven kilometres, then along the Muong Hoa river to Ta Van at twelve. Lao Chai is H'Mong, Dao and Giay; Ta Van is Giay and H'Mong, living in stilt houses. The terraces here, across Lao Chai, Ta Van and Hau Thao, were listed as a national landscape in November 2013 and cover close to 1,000 hectares.
Vehicle pick-up at Ta Van in the late afternoon, shower and dinner in Sa Pa, then the transfer back down to Lao Cai for the night train — SP2 at 20:55 into Hanoi at 04:35, or SP4 at 21:40 into Hanoi at 05:35. Travellers who would rather not arrive before dawn can take the daytime SP8 at 13:40, which reaches Hanoi at 21:42 and turns this into a four-day trip.
Cutting it to two days, and when not to
The two-day version drops day two and keeps the arrival morning and the valley walk. It works for travellers who have already been up a mountain somewhere else and want the villages rather than the summit. It does not work as a way to save money, because the fixed costs of the trip — two night transfers, a guide, the station legs — barely move when you remove a day.
- Two days means one night in Sa Pa, arrival morning plus one full day, and no Fansipan. Expect about 20 percent off the three-day figure, not half.
- Three days is the version described above: two nights in Sa Pa, Fansipan and the valley walk on separate days.
- Four days adds either the daytime train home, or a second valley day towards Ta Phin, and is the only version that suits travellers who sleep badly in transit.
The Fansipan day can also be bought on its own if you are already in Sa Pa — see the cable car day tour. The valley walk works the same way on the Cat Cat and Ta Van page.
When to come
Sa Pa sits at about 1,600 metres. The annual mean is 15.3 degrees, the wettest months run May to September, and the year takes 2,779 millimetres of rain on average. June to August is the warm end, around 23 degrees; December to February the cold end, around 9.5 degrees, with occasional frost and snow on the high ground.
September to November is the rice harvest, when the terraces turn gold. February to May is spring flower season and the fields are flooded for planting in April and May. June to August is the wettest stretch and the one month-group where train services are most likely to run 15 to 30 minutes late.

Six frames from the route
Who this tour is not for
- Travellers who cannot sleep on a moving train or coach. Two of the three nights are in transit, and a bad night on the way up ruins day one whatever the itinerary says.
- Anyone looking for a graded multi-day trek with a difficulty rating. The walking here is 4 to 12 kilometres a day on village paths and road, with a bed in Sa Pa every night.
- Groups with a fixed, unmovable schedule in June, July or August. That is the wet stretch, trains run late, and the cable car can stop for weather without notice.
- Travellers who need a lift to the door of every sight. Cat Cat and Ta Van are reached on foot, on stone and earth paths that are slippery after rain.
- Anyone who wants a private vehicle for the Hanoi leg at the price shown. The figures above assume scheduled rail or coach; a private car for 315 kilometres is a different budget.

Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Is the night train better than the limousine, or just more expensive?
It is better at one specific thing: it lets everybody lie flat in a closed cabin and it lands you in Sa Pa at an hour when a hotel can feed you breakfast. Published fares for a four-berth cabin run roughly VND 490,000 to 650,000 one way against VND 250,000 to 320,000 for a standard coach sleeper, so you are paying a real premium for that.
The road option wins if you are travelling by day rather than overnight, or if your group includes somebody who finds train motion worse than road motion. Night coaches that arrive at 04:00 are the option we recommend least.
How long is the transfer from Lao Cai station to Sa Pa?
Thirty-five kilometres, around fifty to sixty minutes. It is a mountain road with steady switchbacks and it is where travellers who are prone to motion sickness feel it, not on the train.
The transfer is included in both directions and is timed to your service, so a delayed train does not leave you at the station.
Can we do Fansipan and the valley walk on the same day?
Physically yes, sensibly no. The cable car operation runs on its own clock and the valley walk is twelve kilometres, so compressing both into one day means rushing the mountain in the morning and finishing the walk in the dark.
If you only have one full day, choose one. Most travellers who have to choose take the valley.
What happens if the cable car is closed on our Fansipan day?
The operator suspends the cable car in high wind or bad weather and publishes no fixed threshold, so it is checked on the morning rather than predicted.
When it closes we move the mountain to the other free day if there is one, and if there is not, the unused cable car ticket is refunded and the day is rebuilt around Ta Phin or a longer valley route.
